Joint Statement from Prostate Cancer Research and Prostate Cancer UK on the National Screening Committee’s review of prostate cancer screening

Prostate Cancer Research and Prostate Cancer UK welcome the UK National Screening Committee’s (UK NSC) review of prostate cancer screening and the opportunity to contribute evidence and expertise to this important process.

We recognise that decisions in this area must be evidence-led, proportionate and responsive to emerging robust data. The prostate cancer evidence landscape is evolving rapidly, with new data from trials, including Prostate Cancer UK’s TRANSFORM trial, real-world evidence generated through initiatives such as Prostate Cancer Research’s Prostate Progress platform, and diagnostic innovation expected to emerge over the next 24 months.

In this context, we believe it is essential that the health economic model informing the UK NSC remains active beyond the conclusion of the current consultation process, so that it can be updated as soon as new high-quality evidence becomes available, and that any material shift in cost-effectiveness conclusions would appropriately trigger review. A living, updatable model would allow timely incorporation of emerging data and help ensure that future policy decisions reflect contemporary NHS practice and the most current understanding of benefits, harms and cost-effectiveness.

We share a commitment to strengthening the evidence base, particularly in areas where uncertainty remains, and to ensuring that future decisions are informed by robust, contemporary data. An adaptive approach to modelling would help ensure that progress in research translates more rapidly into improved policy and practice.

Both organisations have submitted their own detailed consultation responses, which include additional recommendations reflecting our respective perspectives. We are aligned in calling for a transparent and responsive process that keeps the modelling framework live and capable of incorporating new evidence as it emerges, in the interests of delivering the best possible outcomes for men across the UK.
