Bone metastases are one of the most common and life limiting complications of advanced cancer. Any cancer can spread to the bone, but prostate, breast, lung, and kidney cancers are most likely to do so. Bone metastases are more difficult to treat.

People living with bone metastases face pain, fractures, reduced mobility, and a gradual loss of ability to carry out everyday activities, reducing autonomy and quality of life. This places a heavy physical, emotional, and financial burden not only on patients, but on families, carers, and health systems. Yet research remains fragmented and underfunded with limited investment and few coordinated frameworks to connect disciplines and patient voices.

The Bone Metastases Collective aims to change this.

Who we are

The Bone Metastases Collective (BMC) is a multidisciplinary, pan-cancer research collaborative and advisory group hosted and supported by Prostate Cancer Research (PCR)

The NCRI Bone Metastases Group was initiated in mid-2022

It was officially established in early 2023 shortly before the closure of the NCRI

Since the NCRI closed, the group has continued meeting online, united by the lack of bone metastases research and committed to improving outcomes for patients

The group has restructured to better reflect and implement the strategic priorities, forming the Bone Metastases Collective.

Our Mission

To end bone metastases by 2040 by advancing world-class, patient-informed research that transforms the lives.

Our Vision

Make discoveries that minimise and ultimately eradicate the impact of bone metastases in cancer patients.

Our Objectives

The collective aims to bring together patients and carers, clinicians, scientists, allied health professionals, industrial stakeholders, research funders and charities to drive progress in the bone metastases field. We want to:

  • Accelerate innovation across the field and spark collaboration
  • Enhance bone metastases awareness and improve treatment strategies
  • Unite patient voices across all cancer types to set shared research priorities
  • Transform patient quality of life for people with bone metastases

Patient Advocacy

Patients are the driving force that empowers this group. Many people feel lost when diagnosed with bone metastases often having to navigate fragmented care pathways. We aim to bridge these silos and improve continuity and coordination, so patients feel informed, supported and not alone. We want to:

  • Help reduce patient fear
  • Establish patient prioritised endpoints for research
  • Address inequalities in care pathways
  • Identify treatment gaps and ways forward
  • Build and support Patient and Public Involvement groups

Become part of something bigger

Joining the Bone Metastases Collective gives you the opportunity to be part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary community dedicated to advancing bone metastases research. Benefits of joining include:

  • Shared resources and knowledge: Access cutting-edge research, data, and expertise
  • Collaboration opportunities: Work with clinicians, scientists, engineers, and patient advocates
  • Collective advocacy power: Amplify your voice to influence research priorities and funding
  • A trusted space for innovation: Explore new ideas and approaches in a supportive environment
  • Elevating patient outcomes: Ensure research translates into better treatments, improved experiences, and enhanced lives for patients
