Saturday 18th June 2022

The Beast is a new route for 2022 and is aimed at experienced climbers wanting to push their hiking up a gear.  It guarantees a huge day out that will be challenging, awe-inspiring and rewarding.

Distance: 28km/18 miles

Total ascent: 2350m

Peaks: Elidr Fawr & Yr Wyddfa

Walking time: 12 hours (approx)

Named after the fabled monster, Rhita Gawr, that was dragged to Llyn Glaslyn and killed after terrorising a village in Conwy for decades. This is a looped route starting and finishing at the Royal Victoria. It will initially lead walkers away from Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) to explore the Dinorwig slate quarries and peaks surrounding the north of Llanberis, including Elidir Fawr.  The half way point is Pen Y Pass where you will then take the more classic and stunning route to summit Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the Miners Track.

Places are limited to 30 – so register soon to avoid missing out!

This will be a challenging walk, particularly in one day, with some areas of rough terrain so we recommend it to experienced walkers only. The route will be fully marshalled by experienced, qualified mountain leaders who will ensure you have the most rewarding day possible exploring some of the most stunning and unique views of Snowdonia.

Route information

Starting at the Royal Victoria Hotel you will pass the ancient castle keep of Dolbadarn and attack the zig zagging ascent path in the Dinorwig slate quarries. Your first summit will be Elidir Fawr.

You will then head for Y Garn and take the sweeping path down the grassy flanks to the foot of the Glyder Fawr.  Climbing up steeply on a scree path you reach the summer plateau, which is a broad boulder field with the path winding through.

Now the descent down to Pen y Pass – the half way point! Following the Miners Track to Llyn Glaslyn and the Pyg Track to summit Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), you will descend via the Llanberis Path back into a warm reception from the team at PCR!
