Once a cancer is diagnosed, it is important to decide how far it has spread.

Staging is a description of how far the cancer has spread.

Prostate cancer is staged using the TNM (Tumour, Node, Metastasis) system

The T stage indicates how far the cancer has spread locally:

  •        T1: Cannot be felt and only seen under the microscope – localised
  •        T2: Can be felt or seen on scans, but is contained within the prostate – localised
  •        T3: Invading through edge of prostate – locally advanced prostate cancer
  •        T4: Spread to nearby organs – locally advanced prostate cancer

The N stage indicates whether the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

If cancer has spread to the lymph nodes it is advanced prostate cancer

The M stage indicates whether the cancer has spread to other organs

If the cancer has spread to other organs it is advanced prostate cancer
