As men get older, their prostates get bigger (benign prostatic enlargement).

Most men will have symptoms, usually mild.

In about 10% of men over 50, treatment is needed.

The symptoms include:

  • Weak stream
  • Dribbling
  • Difficulty starting
  • Urgency
  • Frequency
  • Needing to get up in the night

These symptoms can also occur with prostate cancer

If BPH is left untreated, the man may eventually go into retention – he cannot pee.

Retention is a painful emergency and the man has to go to the doctor immediately.

Whatever your symptoms, it is vital that you go to the doctor.
